Brand Spotlight: Vermilyea Pelle

Roughly 150 miles east of Seattle sits the Central Washington town of Wenatchee, WA. The city, primarily known for it’s abundant apple orchards and horses, is where Dustin Spencer, the founder and craftsman behind Vermilyea Pelle, first fell in love with leather working. At the early age of four years old, Dustin would spend time at his Grandfather’s horse tack room, where he’d dig through old boxes of saddles, headstalls, and boots, taking them apart and trying to understand how to put them back together again. Eventually, Dustin was able to start practicing with leather of his own, until he was able to craft belts, wallets, and boots, for himself and friends.

Dustin originally began his career as a cobbler, where he practiced his trade for 12 years, while creating boots for Nicks Boots and Rancourt & Co. During this time, he was able to form a number of relationships within the famous Horween Leathers tannery of Chicago, that allowed him access to high quality leather for his own use. In 2008, his dream and passion was realized when he founded Vermilyea Pelle. The name was created as an homage to his family name (Vermilyea) and the Italian word for leather (Pelle).

The products from Vermilyea Pelle all seem to harness the feeling of vintage, authentic goods, thanks to Dustin’s impeccable craftsmanship and time-honored techniques. Many of Dustin’s products, like his beautiful eponymous belt “The Dustin Belt,” use techniques such as hand-staining and waxing that are often over-looked by many larger belt companies in today’s market. His belts feature unique one piece buckles or hand-stained roller buckles alongside his trademark interior rivet style, which was developed to prevent damage from open rivets. Dustin’s wallets feature a distinctly minimalist design, alongside his trademark branded tree, which symbolizes the lineage of his family.

The products from Vermilyea Pelle are truly one of a kind and we look forward to seeing what Dustin has in store for the future. For more information on Vermilyea Pelle and a list of the brand’s products, click here.

Know Your Wefts

As we get closer and closer to Summer, the desire to branch out from standard indigos and blacks only becomes stronger. Fortunately, we've seen a major influx in unique wefts make it into our shop over the past few months, in a range of styles, from a range of brands. Here, we've collected a number of our favorite pieces designed to help inject a little bit of color into your wardrobe this Summer and beyond.

One of Naked & Famous' most innovative fabrics to date (and that's saying a lot) is without a doubt the Twisted Candy Weft. This beautiful fabric uses multicolor yarns that are twisted and woven together to create a palette of colors that is surprisingly subtle from a distance. The yarns sit beneath a medium shade of indigo, and with age, poke through the surface of the fabric creating a unique slubby and colorful texture.

The Deep Indigo Brown Weft from Momotaro is a sanforized 15oz denim that features a deep indigo warp and a contrasting brown weft. Unlike other takes on indigo/brown, Momotaro's brown weft is made from a higher-contrast dye, giving it a more vibrant color that is visible through the surface of the fabric from day one. As the denim ages, the fabric becomes a dirty brown color that stands out in a sea of indigo jeans without looking too loud.

Using the same yarn twisting and weaving style as the Twisted Candy Weft, the Indigo x Copper Twist takes a traditional white weft and twists copper shavings into the fabric, creating an extremely unique fabric that has a metallic shine on the surface. Up-close, the shine of this fabric is very evident, whereas it is entirely unnoticeable from a distance. As this fabric is worn-in, the metallic shine of the copper is said to only become more evident, making this wild pair of jeans an extremely fun and unique option for Summer.

This 13oz denim from Momotaro became an instant shop favorite from the day it was introduced. The Cobalt Blue Weft features a vibrantly blue colored weft against a deep indigo warp. As the denim ages, the weft begins to poke through the surface progressively more and more, until the denim itself is a vibrant blue color. The contrast of the weft on this particular denim makes it the perfect way to inject more color into your wardrobe without having to commit to anything too drastic or loud.

Perhaps one of the most uniquely colored wefts we've seen in our shop isn't actually a colored weft at all, in the true sense of the term. The Rogue Territory Over Dye takes Rogue Territory's original 14.5oz fabric, and submerges it into a vat of indigo, creating this beautiful, limited edition pair of jeans. Because each pair is individually dipped, no two pairs are alike. The original white weft picks up the majority of the indigo color and comes out as a dynamic blue, whereas the original indigo warp becomes even darker, creating a beautiful contrast and an extremely unique pattern of wear. As this fabric ages, the layers of indigo will rub off revealing the original color of the yarn, with the warp becoming a more electric blue color and the weft more white. The indigo dip also gives the fabric an extremely soft feel from the start, making this a comfortable darker denim option for the Summer time.

The highly-anticipated sequel to Naked & Famous' original Pomegranate fabric, the Pomegranate x Brown, features warp yarns dyed with real pomegranate tannin and an updated brown weft. The brown weft on this denim helps bring the vibrant red pomegranate color down to earth, making for a unique red color that is substantially more muted than the original Pomegranate fabric, and thus, slightly more wearable year-round. As the denim ages, the pomegranate dye from the warp yarns will rub off to reveal their original white color, alongside brown hues from the weft. Oh and no, the fabric does not smell like pomegranate!

The second fruit dye on our list brings us to one of Naked & Famous' most ambitious fabrics to date, the Natural Indigo x Kakishibu. This denim features warp yarns dyed in real natural indigo, and a weft dyed with Japanese persimmon fruit tannin, otherwise known as Kakishibu dye. The Kakishibu dye gives the fabric a beautiful brown weft that contrasts extremely well against the natural indigo seen on the warp. As the denim ages, the indigo will rub off revealing a dirtier, brownish tint to the denim.

Japan Blue's Military Monster is the army-green version of their original 16.5oz Monster fabric. The fabric maintains the irregular slubby texture of the original, but now boasts a military-green weft and a slightly darker shade of indigo throughout the jeans. Japan Blue's Monster fabric is widely known as one of the best fading fabrics on the market today, aging to a beautiful vintage blue color in a surprisingly fast amount of time.

The History of Reigning Champ

Quality knitwear has long been a fundamental of the fashion industry. Because of this, it has become progressively harder and harder to stand out in a sea of brands who specialize in knitwear garments, which makes the success story behind Canadian label Reigning Champ all the more special. Since 2007, Reigning Champ has been producing sportswear staples with an emphasis on sustainability and longevity.

Founded by CYC Design Corporation founder Craig Atkinson, the label originally started inside the company’s Vancouver factory, where they would produce knits for a number of high-profile private labels. Upon recognizing the demand for quality knitwear, and a shift in consumer preferences towards handmade goods, Atkinson sought to expand his corporation’s reach to include a dedicated sportswear company, for which the idea behind Reigning Champ was born. Fresh off the heels of the success of Reigning Champ’s sister brand, wings+horns, Atkinson turned to Kenta Goto to helm the design team on the company’s first seasons and beyond. Goto developed a number of unique fabrics based around athletic silhouettes that perfectly captured the brand’s image.

Since their inception, Reigning Champ has continued to expand their offerings, which now go well beyond just quality knitwear and into shell and nylon based pieces. While Goto insists that Reigning Champ’s timeless garments do not follow trends or seasons in the traditional fashion sense, each season sees a number of new colors or fabrics from the brand in an attempt to keep things fresh. Beyond their core products, Reigning Champ has also done a number of high-profile collaborations with stores, labels, and most recently, the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. These collaborations have helped contribute to the worldwide recognition Reigning Champ has received over the past few years.

The brand has become an instant favorite amongst our customers and employees alike since adding it to our offerings this time last year. For more information on Reigning Champ and a list of the brand’s products, click here.

Japan Blue x Blue Owl Workshop Broken Twill Deep Blue "Monster" Fade Update!

Here's a quick update on a pair of the Broken Twill Deep Blue "Monster" from our office. While these are far from retired, we were amazed by just how much these have aged in such a short amount of time. Over the past 4 months, Jay has worn these nearly everyday, while walking roughly 10 miles a day between his commute to and from the office. During the 4 months of wear, these jeans have seen 2 full washes. Check out the images below and for more information on the Broken Twill Deep Blue "Monster," click on the link above.

Japan Blue x Blue Owl Workshop
16.5oz Broken Twill Deep Blue "Monster"
4 Months | 2 Washes

Front side.

Back side.

Notice how much the leather patch has changed in such a short amount of time.

Jay switches his phone between both pockets, as evident by the outline on both sides.

Visibly defined creases behind the knees, formed from walking large amounts at an intense pace.

One thing we love about the Deep Blue Monster series is the level of contrast we've seen amongst the fabrics. As you can see here, the fabric, which starts out as a deep dark Indigo/Black (seen along the waistband), gradually changes to a very vibrant, high-contrast blue, which will become even more apparent over time.

Notice how much the broken twill becomes visible with wear, as does the vertical fading.

Lots of wear on both knees.

Substantially beat up cuffs.

Get to Know Fremont: Milstead & Co. Coffee

This month we introduce an on-going series to our blog/newsletter based around our very own Seattle neighborhood, Fremont. Proudly known as the “Center of the Universe,” the quirky neighborhood of Fremont is home to a number of Seattle’s best local businesses. In this series, we’ve cataloged some of our favorite local restaurants, coffee shops, and hangout spots for those of you visiting from out of town, or those of you new to the area. Check out our picks below and keep your eye on this column for more tips in the future.

Situated on the corner of N 34th St. and Troll Ave. N., this rustic coffee shop has quickly become one of the staples in the Seattle coffee scene since it’s inception in 2011. Founded by Andrew Milstead, Milstead & Co. prides itself on serving carefully sourced coffee from local and international roasters. Their dedication and passion for coffee has gained Milstead & Co. national acclaim as one of the best new coffee shops today.

While you're there, don't hesitate to ask Milstead's team of baristas questions about the espresso shot they're pouring. The coffee experts behind the counter will proudly tell you anything from where the coffee is sourced, roasting methods, even down to differences in tasting notes depending on temperature.

If you visit the shop in the warmer months, make sure to step outside into Milstead’s outdoor patio, which features beautiful repurposed furniture, locally grown plants, and an old firetruck that sits in the shadow of the Aurora Bridge.

If you’re inside, check out the well-curated selection of roasters, brewing equipment, and teas available for home use.
