Vintage Machinery: Circular Knit Machines

Circular knit machines were produced back in the 1940's and 1950's which produce a knit fabric that is ultra-soft, durable, and becomes softer with wear.  This factory in Montreal is one of the few which is continuing the tradition of using these original vintage circular knit machines to produce their spectacular fabrics. I am not an expert on the subject, but from my understanding these circular knit machines are a later generation of the original loopwheel machines from the 1920's through the 1930's. Bottom line, these machines are old and move very slowly and because of the slower weave and the painstaking process, they are able to achieve a much softer and more durable fabric compared to newer generations of the circular knit machine which are computerized and built more for mass production purposes.
The factory is a small family owned business that is just a few doors down from the Naked & Famous main office in Montreal and make the Naked & Famous cicular knit t-shirts that we just received. These photos are from around the 1950's and show the machinery used and the sew shop which probably looks very similar to this today.
