These ancient machines are difficult to kept running. They have been obsolete for decades and spare parts are hard to come by. What often happens is some shuttle looms cannot be repaired and are retired to the fields where they are occasionally picked over for spare parts to keep the other machines in working order.
These machines are at a small denim mill in Okayama. It is sad to see these historic machines just sitting in a field, but like keeping a vintage muscle car in working order, there needs to be a source for the parts. Hopefully when one of the working shuttle looms breaks downs, the shuttle loom graveyard will have the necessary pieces to keep them moving.

The black version is oil dyed in house, the natural is kept simple and will darken with wear.

The fabric is a 14oz selvedge made in Japan which has an inconsistent weave and yarn size giving a vintage look and texture. The selvedge line will be white with red accent. Notice the light tones coming through the indigo yarn. This fabric is traditionally used by Japanese cult heritage denim brands.
The surface has a hairy texture and a soft touch and the dye used gives a rich indigo color, yet is inconsistent due to the weave of the yarns.
Our newest edition to our Momotaro collection just arrived - Grand Indigo raw selvedge in the tight straight fit. The Momotaro Grand Indigo denim features a seriously deep indigo color which is achieved by the natural indigo Zimbabwe cotton warp yarns and the sulphur dyed black weft yarns.

Momotaro's "tight straight" denim fit is slim in the top block, has a low rise, runs slim in the leg, and tapers slightly towards the leg opening.

Notice the pink (peach) interior thread along the inseam. The pink thread represents the peach from the "Momotaro" folklore story and is one of the signature features of Momotaro denim.
Antique copper rivets. Notice the subtle hint of selvedge hidden under the coin pocket. Hidden coin pocket selvedge in another feature of Momotaro denim.
Deer skin patch.

Momotaro's shirting are also made with delicate care and detailed works of sewing, washing, weaving, and dying, all of which using traditional methods passed down from generations of denim artisans. We just received our first work shirt style from Momotaro from their "Going to Battle" series.

The "Going to Battle" stripes are a symbol of Japanese tradition representing honor and strength. The warrior stripes have been used in many contexts in Japanese history and culture. One of the most well known associations is from the Japanese folklore story of "Momotaro" who carried a flag with two white stripes as he left to battle a band of marauding Oni (ogres) on a distant island who terrorized the region.

3sixteen's long awaited new denim production is finally ready and we expect them to land in store next week. With this season's production, 3sixteen is introducing a new fabric which has been custom designed and exclusive to 3sixteen. It is a 14.5oz high slub selvedge denim woven in Japan which has been sanforized, skewed, and singed. Though the fabric has been singed, it is still not heavily processed and the surface will have a hairiness and slub. What we like about it is that to the untrained eye, it looks clean and uniform (so it functions well as a dressier jean), but for someone who knows what they're looking for, they'll be able to spot some interesting facets about the textile. Compared to the 3sixteen previous fabric, this denim will be slightly heavier and have an even softer feel with more intricate details.
Founded in 2003 in New York City's Lower East Side, 3sixteen aims to create collections that demonstrate longevity in both design and construction by producing clothing that will hold up to extensive wear and remain relevant season after season. The brand's aesthetic is built upon utilitarian silhouettes from decades past that are updated with premium materials and modern fits. The majority of the collection is handsewn in the USA of the finest fabrics, ensuring that every piece has a compelling story to tell.
3sixteen has a strong following among denim enthusiast and what makes 3sixteen stand out in the denim world is their minimalistic approach in design, the custom made fabrics from Japan, and their two staple fits. Our first shipment will include both of the 3sixteen denim fits (slim straight, slim tapered) in raw selvedge indigo and slim tapered in raw selvedge black.
